Colours of the emissions inspection sticker

Showing your colours for fresh air

Cars that contaminate the air with particulate matter must stay outside. Only vehicles with emissions testing stickers in one of three colours (green = clean, yellow = average, red = still acceptable) on the windshield may enter the environmental zones.

Which colour is your car?

Depending on its pollutant emissions, your car is given a green, yellow, or red sticker. Vehicles with high emissions, such as petrol engines without a catalytic converter, are not eligible for an emissions sticker. Virtually all petrol engines with regulated catalytic converters or vehicles powered by liquefied petroleum gas, natural gas, or ethanol get a green badge, and with it free access to the environmental zones.

The following illustrations of the new and old vehicle registration will show you the places where the emissions key number of your vehicle is listed.
(figures)

Old vehicle registration
(5th and 6th digits of 6-digit key number for field 1)

New registration document, vehicle registration document part I
(3. and 4th digits of 4-digit code for field 14.1)

The sticker colour is based on the emissions key number. If the emissions key number of your vehicle is not listed in the table, no emissions sticker may be issued.

Motor homes up to 2.8 t permissible gross weight are considered cars, while those above 2.8 t and other special vehicles are considered lorries.

Show your true colours: the sticker in the windshield

Place the emissions sticker on the inside of your car so that it is clearly visible. The best place is the lower area of the windshield on the passenger side.

In this way the pollutant classes are assigned emission-related key numbers

* Particle reduction system (diesel particulate filter)
1) In the case of gas vehicles according to Directive 2005/55/EC (previously 88/77/EEC)
2) Cars with key number "27" or "0427" and the statement "96/69/ EC I" with
a total permissible weight (zGM) of more than 2500 kg, according to Annex 2
Paragraph 1 no. 4 n) of the Vehicle Licensing Law are to receive a green sticker.
This is done if it is proved that the car meets the requirements of
Level PM 1 of Annex XXVI of the road traffic licensing regulations.

Everything clean?

Due to

  • emissions-related technical changes, such as engine tuning or retrofitting of a catalytic converter/particulate reduction system,
  • body type changes, such as changing category from car to motor home
  • and previous emissions key changes

ambiguities in the assignment of environmental badge colour are possible.
In this case, we'd be glad to advise you at a TÜV station in your area.
