Driving with perspective
Window films protect against bright sunlight and curious eyes. However, they are not always completely safe. Due to lack of visibility, pedestrians and cyclists can quickly be run over. Particularly in the dark. For this reason, the road traffic regulations demand clear vision for drivers.
Sun protection without the shady drawbacks
In summer, window films protect against the sun and heat. But they must also let light through.
- Windscreens must allow at least 75% of light through.
- All other windows must allow at least 70% of light through.
Do not use window films that appear as dark as sunglasses from the outside. These comply neither with regulations nor with traffic safety.
Even minimally-tinted films do not comply with the requested threshold value. They frequently let only approximately 70% of light through. "Crystal clear" films have a value of around 85%. And we have not even taken the vehicle window's share of the overall transparency into account here.
The perfect film for the right window
Before you apply films to rear side windows and the rear window, you should carefully read the "type approval" and the installation instructions. These describe:
- On which windows you are permitted to apply the films (in general, use is restricted as described above)
- How to best apply the film (e.g. do not stick it on the frame or the rubber seal, each piece of film must have a test symbol)
- What you should additionally check when sticking the film to the rear window (e.g. second wing mirror).
TÜV NORD expert tip
Note: In the event of a police check, the type approval should also be close to hand.
