Importing vehicles

Bargain hunting between Copenhagen and Los Angeles

The low prices of new cars speak volumes for European import vehicles. And, on the other hand, there is hardly anything that speaks against them. The warranties, for example, apply all across Europe. The USA attract many customers with the affordable dollar. However, despite all the joys of getting a good bargain, you should consider several points before buying an import.

  1. US Imports
  2. EU Import of a new car with EC type approval
  3. EU import of a used car with EG type approval
  4. EU import of a used car without EC type approval
  5. Re-registration after more than 84 months after deregistration

US-Importe: The American Way of Driving

There are many question marks that arise prior to buying a US car. What is allowed in Germany? How much do the possible modifications cost? What to do? In general, the following applies: the vehicle must meet the statutory road traffic regulations applicable in Germany when it is registered. You are best advised to consult an expert about the required modifications in advance.

The decisive factor is the exhaust emission test.
Exhaust emission test can pose problems if your vehicle is the first of its kind to be registered. The measurement procedures in the USA, Canada, and Germany are completely different. As a result, the exhaust emission values and measurement results are not comparable. Some car manufacturers issue a corresponding certification, which, however, experience has shown cannot be completely trusted. At our recognised exhaust emission control laboratory, a exhaust gas measurement costs approximately 1000 euros for a vehicle with a gasoline engine and approximately 1200 euros for a vehicle with a diesel engine.

Since the vehicle tax in Germany is measured according to the vehicle's exhaust gas emissions and the vehicle must have an applicable emission key number, an exhaust emission test is essential.

Lights out for American lighting systems
The lighting system is generally to be modified according to the European regulations. US headlamps must be replaced with headlamps that are approved in Germany. Alternatively, you can obtain an individual assessment for a headlamp at a recognised technical light institute. However, it costs around 900 euros.

The front yellow side lights in the blinkers must be replaced with white lights. If the headlamps must be replaced, you may integrate them into the new headlamps. Red rear blinkers are prohibited. You may also need to install the yellow turn signal lamps or the complete rear lighting units for these models. And, in the end, you must retrofit the vehicle with a type-approved rear fog lamp.

The American dream in the eyes of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations
To register your American vehicle, you require a corresponding assessment according to § 21 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO). You can ask for one at all TÜV STATIONS, where we offer special acceptance test certificates. You require a temporary license plate from your registration office for the trip to the TÜV STATION.

If the expert gives his written OK, you can register the vehicle at the registration office.

You should enclose all the available technical data of your vehicle with all enquiries to the car manufacturer. Always remember to provide the complete vehicle identification number (VIN).

Clear the road for EU imports

Brand-new European models with EC type approval
Take a look beyond the borders. New cars often cost considerably less with our neighbours. However, they are also partially fitted with different technical equipment.
If there is an EG type approval (EG-TG) for the new car, the car manufacturer or an importer authorised by the car manufacturer only needs to issue the certificate of conformity (CoC).
This document allows you to register the car at your registration office without any problems. A complete vehicle inspection is not required.

EU import of used car with EG type approval
You require the registration papers providing verification of the initial registration date for used import cars. In this case, the car can be also registered based on a Certificate of Conformity (CoC). If German regulations require the car to undergo a general inspection, you must have the inspection conducted first. You then submit the test report along with the Certificate of Conformity and the foreign registration papers to your registration office.

EU Import of a used car without EG type approval
If you cannot submit a Certificate of Conformity for your vehicle, you require a certificate according to § 21 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations and an exhaust gas inspection certificate.

The TÜV expert inspects everything according to the law and order to issue you the required certificate. You then take this certificate to the responsible registration office. There, you will receive your registration certificates and the official registration plate.

You would be best to arrange an appointment directly at your TÜV STATION. You require a temporary license plate from your registration office for the trip to the TÜV STATION. However, this is not required if the vehicle is still registered and insured abroad and the licence plates are still valid.

Re-registration after more than 84 months after deregistration
Temporary deregistration is limited to a maximum of 84 months. If this deadline has expired, you should clarify with the registration office whether a general inspection is sufficient or a complete vehicle inspection is required.

You can ask for one at all href="[ioID]D1590DB684F540FDAA801498CB1E8528" target="_self">TÜV STATIONS, where we offer special acceptance test certificates. You then drive with the certificate to your registration office and register the car. You will receive your registration certificates and the official registration plate. Happy travelling!

However, in this case, the following applies: The car must be insured for the appraisal. You need a red licence plate for the trip to the TÜV STATION.
