The contact surface between the wheel and the track corresponds approximately to the area of a 20-cent coin. For this reason, the flawless interaction between the track and the rolling stock is an important prerequisite for safe railway operation. Technically, movement dynamics and the electromagnetic compatibility play a major role. Operationally, the operational processes and the train monitoring are of importance.
In addition to the wheel-track contact, the interfaces are the clear space profile, the track circuitry and the axle counters and the inductive and electromagnetic data transmission installations. However, evidence of the safety can only be provided with comprehensive system knowledge, which goes considerably beyond the knowledge of the interfaces.
