"People" saving factor
Save with style
When fuel prices increase, you should reduce your consumption. The right driving style is important. With our simple tricks you can save a great deal. It will be worth it.
1. Drive off straight away.
Get in, adjust your seat, put your seatbelt on and drive off without waiting for the car to warm up: If you drive off straight away, your engine will warm up more quickly and you will use less fuel.
2. Change gear more quickly, lower consumption
Accelerate steadily and change to a higher gear straight away: The higher the gear, the lower your fuel consumption. Noise levels and pollutant emissions also drop if you do not stay in gear until the last moment. Conversely, you should also wait to change down for as long as you can: Only switch to a lower gear when the engine begins to judder.
Your car uses the least petrol when the engine is turning at 1,500 to 3,000 revolutions.
Only drive in first gear for a very short time; on many cars you can switch to fourth gear at 40 km/h. A mid-size car will save up to three litres of petrol if you drive in fourth gear instead of second at 50 km/h.
3. Switch off the engine and do a good deed for your wallet
The lights turn to red, the barrier lowers in front of your nose. You know full well that your trip is going to take a bit longer. Turn off your engine now. Idling, an engine uses between 0.8 and 1.5 litres of petrol per hour. You could heat a detached house with that just as well.
4. Always go gently
Motorway speeders not only endanger traffic, they also blow petrol out of their exhaust pipes for no reason. The best speed is 70 – 80 percent of your top speed. It is best to keep your speed as even as possible. Braking and speeding up are also costly pleasures.
5. Attention, consumption check
Check your fuel and oil consumption every time you fill up. If you notice that consumption is increasing for no obvious reason, you should take action quickly. Take note of our tips or ask our experts at your closest TÜV station.
6. Electrical extras cost extra
Air conditioning, fan, seat heating, auxiliary head lamps: Anywhere energy is needed, fuel is used. Only switch on electrical consumers when necessary. However, safety is a priority. Do not do without necessary aids if this means putting yourself and others in danger.
7. Be foresighted when driving and save
But stay calm: Simply go with the flow of traffic. Keep enough distance from the vehicle in front so that you can compensate for fluctuations in speed by taking your foot off the accelerator, instead of putting your foot on the brake. If you see a red light in the distance, let the engine idle and simply coast to a stop.
8. Go away, traffic jam!
On longer journeys, pay attention to traffic announcement and avoid traffic jams. When possible, drive outside of rush-hour periods.
9. Ask your sat nav
Many navigation systems allow you to ask for petrol-saving routes inside the city. Or you can drive routes that you know are less likely to be congested.
10. Leave your car at home
Without question the number one way to save petrol: Leave your car at home. Short distances are best covered by foot or bicycle. It is healthy and brings huge savings, for your car uses the most fuel when it is cold. Average fuel consumption over the first few hundred metres can be as much as 30 litres per 100 km.
