Questions and answers

Be better informed. Drive better. Be better now.

People frequently carry their driver's license in their wallet directly over their hearts. And, for most of us, it really is a matter of the heart. We have the answers to all your questions concerning the beloved driver's license.

  1. As a driver's licence holder, do I have to exchange my old grey or pink driver's license?
No, there is no exchange requirement.
If, however, you would like to take advantage of some of the additional opportunities offered in the new driver's licence classes (e.g. BE class driving with a trailer without any axle restrictions),
you must have your old driver's licence converted into a new credit card driving licence (see also: special features of the EU driver's license law)

  2. Can I drive class A1 (old: class 1b) light motorcycles (11 KW/ 125 ccm) with my old class 3 driver's license?
    Yes and no.
If you were issued your class 3 driver's license before 1.4.1980, then you are allowed to drive light motorcycles.
If you were issued your driver's license after this date, then unfortunately, you are now longer entitled to do so.

  3. I had my old class 3 driver's license transferred into a new EU credit card driving licence. It now also has the class CE with the key number 79.

Can I now drive semitrailer tractors with a a permissible total weight exceeding 7.5 t?

    No.
The registrations only take the previous vested rights into consideration. (see also: driving train combinations with classes C1E, BE, and the "old" class 3 license)

  4. Do I have to take a moped test in any case?
No. If you were born before 1.4.1965, you do not need a moped test certificate.

  5. Can I drive trikes and quads with the class A driver's license?
    No.
The class B (or class 3) driver's license is required for such vehicles.
You require the class S. (see also: The new class S) driver's license for small three-wheeled motorcycles or light four-wheeled motorised vehicles (up to max. 45 km/h)

  6. Which kind of vacant buses can I still drive with my lorry driver's licence as of February 1 2005?
Changes in the driver's license ordinance have restricted driving vacant buses with a lorry driver's licence, since the labour mobility is not compatible with the regulations of the European Union.
The time in which you acquired your driver's license determines which vehicles you may drive.
You can find out what is allowed using the overview.
