According to the current European standards, the holistic aspect is of importance for the complete verification of safety as outlined in the CENELEC EN 50126, EN 50128 and EN 50129 standards today. Modern assessment of reliability, availability, maintainability and safety is known as RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety). The EN 50126 standard is the basis for qualified RAMS analyses, which identify the respective risks for systems, components, parts and the human factor. Furthermore, these analyses are designed to verify that the measures and the operational rules are sufficient for achieving a prescribed Safety Integrity Level (SIL) and, if necessary, ensuring risk reduction. Methods such as ALARP and GAMAB provide the tools, as do the processes outlined in the relevant standards.
