Before winter puts you on thin ice
Winter camping is booming. If you want to drive up snowy mountains in your mobile home, even the best winter tyres will eventually skid. Only snow chains will work in this situation. With a little bit of practice, mounting snow chains is generally child's play: Most modern U-chains can be mounted in a matter of minutes. Still, you should practice mounting snow chains at home beforehand so that you are not "left out in the cold" during snowdrifts later.
For perfect chain traction
- Caution, clammy hands: put a pair of gloves in the car with the snow chains.
- Read the manufacturer's instructions.
- Fit the snow chains preferably on a level road.
- Wear a high visibility vest while fitting the snow chains to ensure other drivers can see you in good time.
- A water-proof mat makes putting snow chains on much easier.
- Never drive faster than 50 km/h with snow chains.
Pay attention to the details below when buying snow chains.
- To ensure you have a safe journey, snow chains and vehicle must be suited to each other. For example, low-profile tyres require special snow chains.
- Snow chains with so-called "spike strips" are not permitted on all roads.
- Just how good a snow chain is becomes clear on bare asphalt. Sacrificing safety is a false economy.
- When travelling to Austria, your snow chains must comply with the so-called Ö standard.
