Transport of hazardous goods / hazardous goods vehicles
Inspection of vehicles in line with GGVSE/ADR
The requirements for safe transport of hazardous goods are regulated by the legal provisions appertaining to the individual carrier, e.g.
- in the German Regulation on the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road and Rail (GGVSE) for the transport of hazardous goods in Germany and within the European Union
- This is prescribed by the European accord on the international transport of hazardous goods on roads (ADR).
The GGVSE and the ADR divide hazardous goods vehicles, according to their planned usage, into vehicle types or transport units which must meet various requirements and be suitably equipped depending on which type of hazardous materials they deal with. Some vehicle types are required to present a license for transporting hazardous goods to certify that they confirm to special construction and equipment stipulations. This particularly applies to tanker vehicles, conveyance vehicles for tank containers and demountable tanks and vehicles for transporting explosive materials as well as the towing vehicles for these vehicles.
The ADR vehicle registration documents are issued after all tests are passed at a technical test centre and are valid for one year from point of issue. Following the end of this one-year period, a recurrent test and renewal of the licence are required every 12 months.
