The so-called gas discharge light is becoming more and more popular. Floodlights are all the rage on the Internet. Many drivers would like to convert their headlights. But Xenon headlights are illegal because they seem as strong as highbeams. If an accident occurs, things will look very dark for the owner of the xenon lights.
Don't burn your fingers
The accessories dealers often describe the gas discharge light sources as Xenon bulbs or Xenon burners. To some extent, correspondingly converted headlights are already being offered.
Everything looks easy: Remove the halogen bulb, install the Xenon burner and then screw on the ballast. What the sellers often fail to mention is: It's illegal. Headlights are only granted a design approval in connection with a specific type of bulb. Converting them voids the approval. The consequences of this: The vehicle's operating permit and the insurance protection become invalid.
Only buy headlight sets with an approved design
If you would still like to bathe the street in light with a Xenon conversion, you should only install complete headlight sets with a corresponding design approval. Note that motor vehicles that have been converted to Xenon light must also be equipped with:
- an automatic headlight range control
- a headlight cleaning system and
- a system that ensures that the low beams are constantly on even when high beams are used.
This makes it safe
Only purchase conversion sets that have a vehicle part approval or a general operating permit (ABE). In this way, you can be certain that the headlights have a valid design approval.
